PURPOSE

To oversee the quality of the Continuing Medication Education (CME) Program at Riverside Methodist Hospital
through ensuring absolute compliance with the Elements and Standards for CME accreditation of the Ohio
State Medical Association (OSMA), as well as the criteria developed by the Accreditation Council for CME
(ACCME).  To create exemplary educational activities that ensure the Riverside medical staff have the
opportunity to remain up-to-date and on the cutting edge of the Physician Competencies and Attributes of the
ACGME, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Board of Medical Specialties (i.e. patient care, medical
knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills,
professionalism and systems-based practice).


COMPOSITION

This shall be a multidisciplinary committee of medical staff members with representation from patient safety,
clinical quality, nursing and administration to ensure integration of CME activities with the Hospital and its
initiatives.

The committee shall be composed of:

  • Chair, who shall be the Vice President of Medical Education
  • Vice-chair who shall be the Director of the Center for Medical Education and Innovation (CME+I)
  • One physician from each of the following departments/sections (maximum of two 3-year terms or 6
    years)

            Family Practice                          Internal Medicine                        
            Ob-Gyn                                        Medical or Surgical Oncology
            Surgery                                        Hospitalist

  • Chief Medical Officer of OhioHealth
  • Nursing Education Leadership (maximum of 2 terms or 6 years)
  • Vice President of Quality & Patient Safety or an appointed Process Improvement Council (PIC)
    Representative
  • Peer Review Representative (MRPC Chair or member)
  • Corporate Patient Safety Representative
  • Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs
  • Medical Director for Medicine
  • Medical Staff Leadership Representative (e.g. President Elect, or Past President of the Medical Staff,
    etc.)
  • CME Manager
  • CME Professionals from Grady Memorial & Marion General Hospital campuses
  • Members at Large (e.g. excellent role models in teaching, representatives of the OSMA, etc.)
  • One physician from each of the following departments/sections, selected by their role in a Clinical
    Operations Council or Continuous Performance Improvement Team, shall serve as ad hoc members,
    to be called upon as needed:

    Anesthesia                                Cardiovascular
    Emergency Medicine               Information Technology
    Orthopedic Surgery                  Neuroscience
    Pathology                                   Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee
    Psychiatry                                   Radiology                                        


FUNCTIONS

  1. Evaluate professional practice gaps and prioritize the needs and topics submitted for CME activities.
  2. Determine the educational needs of the Medical Staff based on results of patient care evaluation from
    Process Improvement Council, Patient Safety, and other such monitoring committees, as well as
    reports from other departments in the hospital, in order to plan and implement appropriate activities.
  3. Review all activities submitted for continuing medical education credit by the hospital (Riverside
    departments, service lines, and administration).
  4. Encourage and expand the use of electronic media and distance-based education opportunities in an
    effort to leverage current and emerging technologies and to increase the participation of our medical
    staff in CME.
  5. Review requests for joint sponsorship of educational activities with other hospitals and organizations
    within the state which are not CME accredited.
  6. Review policies and procedures as needed for designation of CME activities necessary to maintain
    continuing accreditation of the Riverside Methodist Hospital CME Program by the Ohio State Medical
    Association.
  7. Oversee the income and expenses of both the CME Hospital Account (portion of the medical staff
    dues) and the CME Foundation Fund (funds transferred from the CME Account at the end of each fiscal
    year).
  8. Conduct strategic planning for CME on a periodic basis.
