Mission Statement
Purpose
The mission of Riverside Methodist Hospital’s CME Program is to support OhioHealth’s commitment to
“improve the health of those we serve” by creating high quality educational interventions that advance the
knowledge, competence and performance of physicians to enhance their professional practice. The CME
provided is considered a fundamental and integral asset to medical education and to the improvement of
quality care and patient safety.  Therefore, the Hospital administration and the Medical Staff will jointly
provide the administrative and financial resources necessary to maintain the CME Program.

Content
The curriculum will include a broad range of primary care and specialty educational activities, as well as
address the professional development of teaching and administrative physicians. Practice gaps in the
learners’ current or potential scope of professional practice will be identified.  CME activities will be
designed to close these gaps by advancing knowledge and competence, continuously improving clinical
skills and performance, and addressing professional behaviors related to the practice of medicine.
Activities will be designed to incorporate the desired physician attributes as defined by the ACGME &
ABMS competencies.

Target Audience
The target audience of the CME Program includes physicians at Riverside, within the OhioHealth
System, and throughout the state of Ohio.  As a major teaching institution, we also welcome and
encourage attendance of medical students, residents, nurses and other healthcare professionals to
foster multidisciplinary collaboration.

Types of Activities
Multiple types of CME will be offered including Regularly Scheduled Series, live symposia, web-based
education, simulation activities, and live teleconferences.  In an effort to accommodate the diverse
learning styles of physicians, education is provided through simulation, didactic, interactive, case-based,
web-based and journal-based formats.  Riverside will also jointly sponsor activities to work
collaboratively with the community.

Expected Results
The overall CME Program will ensure physicians are advancing their medical knowledge and
competence, developing their teaching skills, improving their performance in practice, and/or improving
patient outcomes.  Metrics for determining the achievement of the expected results may include:
  • Competence: Pre-/Post-activity self-assessments to measure knowledge acquisition, ability to
apply strategy to a practice situation using the knowledge gained, and/or increased confidence
    levels.
  • Performance: Identifying intentions to change their practice as a result of the content conducted
immediately following intervention, with follow-up surveys 30-90 days post-activity to determine
whether new behaviors were incorporated as intended.
  • Patient Outcomes:  Collaborate with Process Improvement, Patient Safety and/or other areas to
identify educational opportunities for physicians regarding initiatives as documented by
Riverside/OhioHealth indicators and review for changes post-intervention(s).

The results of these assessments will be analyzed to determine if the expected results were achieved.
Riverside’s CME Program will be evaluated to determine overall achievement of its mission, compliance
with the Criteria for Accreditation, improvements to be made, and the results of prior improvement
recommendations.
